How the Amex Gold Card Works in 2025
The American Express Gold Card is a metal, mid-tier rewards card aimed at U.S. consumers who spend heavily on food and travel. In 2025, it has a $325 annual fee and focuses on Membership Rewards points that can be used for travel, statement credits, gift cards, online checkout and more. On the earning side, the Gold Card gives 4X Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the U.S., on up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X after that. It also earns 4X points at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X, which can be very lucrative for households that cook at home regularly. For travel, you earn 3X points on flights booked directly with airlines or via American Express Travel and typically 1X on most other eligible purchases, with some guides also highlighting 2X points on certain prepaid hotels through Amex Travel.
Beyond raw points, the card is packed with recurring credits. You can receive up to $120 in dining credits per year, issued as up to $10 in statement credits each month when you use the card at select partners such as Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com and Five Guys, after enrollment. Separately, you can get up to $120 in Uber Cash annually—up to $10 each month—when you add the Gold Card to your Uber account and use it for eligible Uber Eats orders or U.S. rides. There is also a Resy dining benefit that can provide up to $100 in statement credits per year at eligible U.S. Resy restaurants, as well as a Dunkin’ credit of up to $84 per year when used at participating U.S. locations, all with enrollment required and monthly caps.
For travelers, the Gold Card has no foreign transaction fees and offers access to The Hotel Collection through American Express Travel, where qualifying two-night stays can come with on-property credits (often around $100) for eligible dining, spa or resort experiences at participating properties. Cardholders also get standard American Express protections and conveniences such as purchase protection, car rental loss and damage insurance (secondary), presale or preferred event ticket access, and various travel and shopping offers targeted through Amex Offers. Taken together, the rewards, credits and protections can easily outweigh the annual fee for people who consistently use the card’s food and travel-centric features.
Turn Your Everyday Spending into Gold
For U.S. consumers who love food and travel, the Amex Gold Card can act as a powerful engine for rewards without straying into ultra-premium territory. The combination of 4X points at restaurants worldwide and 4X at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year, then 1X) means that the money you already spend on brunches, date nights, takeout and weekly grocery runs can translate into a fast stream of flexible points. Add 3X on flights booked directly with airlines or on AmexTravel.com, and your trips help fuel future trips, especially if you redeem points with airline and hotel partners for outsized value. When you layer the card’s ongoing earning power on top of built-in credits, the math becomes even more compelling.
Used strategically, the recurring credits alone can offset or even surpass the annual fee. If you regularly order from eligible food delivery apps or visit partner restaurants, the monthly dining credits can feel like getting a small rebate on your habits. Likewise, the monthly Uber Cash can help with workday commutes, late-night rides or lazy Sunday deliveries. For frequent travelers, The Hotel Collection benefits (two-night minimum) and the hotel experience credit can sweeten weekend getaways or extended stays, effectively returning value in the form of spa treatments, on-property dining or other extras you might have paid for anyway. Because Membership Rewards points can transfer to multiple airline and hotel programs, you retain flexibility—redeeming for statement credits when convenience matters, or transferring for premium-cabin flights when you want maximum cents-per-point value.
Of course, the Amex Gold Card is not a set-and-forget product. To fully unlock its potential, you need to remember to enroll in credits, add the card to your Uber account, select it at checkout where required, and route the right purchases to it—especially dining, groceries and flights. Cardholders who enjoy this level of engagement can be rewarded generously, while people who forget to use the benefits may find the annual fee harder to justify. Still, with no foreign transaction fees, broad restaurant coverage (including delivery and takeout in the U.S.), and useful protections like purchase protection and extended warranty, the card fits naturally into the lifestyle of consumers who prioritize food, everyday convenience and meaningful travel value. It becomes even more appealing for those who want a rewards card that delivers consistent returns without requiring luxury-tier spending or complex redemption strategies.
